PROFESSOR OLUFEMIWA NIYI MAKINDE.
Professor Makinde Olufemiwa Niyi graduated with B.Sc (Hons)(1978), and MB.Ch.B.(1981) from University of Ife, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. He obtained the Fellowship of West African College of Surgeons ( FWACS).He joined the services of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife in 1994 and by dint of hard work was promoted to the grade of Professor 1st October 2013.
I am a teacher and a researcher in clinical Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Perinatology with forays in to gender-based issues. Over the years, I have trained and mentored along with others over 3,000 undergraduates and over 40 postgraduate students, three of whom are professors in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Along with others, I teach a course in HIV/AIDS policy programme and preventive issues to Masters students in Public Health. From 2007 till date, I have been the coordinator for the prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. I have over 50 publications in international and national journals. I gave my inaugural lecture on the 10th of October 2017 with the title – “ Giving the best to avert the worst: the odyssey of an obstetrician cum gynaecologist in Ile-Ife.” I have co-facilitated training workshops and other educational activities on gender, sexual and reproductive health for universities, not-for profit organizations and government agencies for over two decades mainly in the South-west, South –east and Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria. I was a volunteer consultant and resource person to an NGO- Women Against Rape Sexual Harassment and Sexual Exploitation (WARSHE) from 1998 – 2013. I was involved in the clinical management of victims /survivors of these dastardly acts and participated as a resource person in intensive training workshops for focal groups in four of the six states in Southwest Nigeria. He had participated in many research and capacity meetings and projects with national and international donor agencies.
