PROFESSOR OWOLABI ALEXANDER TUESDAY

Professor Owolabi, Alexander Tuesday was born on the 21st of October, 1957 at Isanlu Town in East Yagba LGA of Kogi State. I had my secondary school education at St. Kizito’s College, Isanlu 1972-1976. I had my medical education at the Premier Medical School of the University of Ibadan graduating with Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) Degree in 1983. I had my Postgraduate training at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital and became a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons (Faculty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology) in 1996. I obtained a Masters of Community Health Degree (M.COMM.H) at Obafemi Awolowo University 2003 with bias in Health Education and Community Service and Master Level Post Graduate Award in Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) at the prestigious Warwick University and Coventry NHS Trust in the United Kingdom (2009-2010). I joined the services of the Obafemi Awolowo University on the 4th April, 1997 as Lecturer I, rose to become Senior Lecturer 1st of October 2003, Reader 1st October 2007 and Professor 1st October 2011. I had been a Honorary Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Ile-Ife since 1997 till date. I have been a member of University Senate from 2011 till date and serve as members of various committees in the University and the Teaching Hospital.

My area of Sub Specialisation is in Reproductive Endocrinology and Fertility Research and Management especially with the use of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) and In-vitro Fertilisation and Embryo Transfer (IVF-ET) to solve the problem of infertility that has become epidemic in our community. I am currently the Unit Head of the Reproductive Endocrinology, Fertility Research and In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Unit of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Perinatology of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.  I am actively involved in the teaching of undergraduate and post graduate students in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and have successfully supervised Master Degree Students and trained over 40 Consultants and Fellows of the West African Post Graduate College who are presently practicing in Nigeria and other Countries all over the world.

I am a member of many professional bodies which include Nigerian Medical Association, Nigerian Medical & Dental Association, and Society of Obstetrics & Gynaecology of Nigeria, European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE), American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (ISUOG). I gave the 306th Inaugural Lecture of the Obafemi Awolowo University titled: None shall be barren: Reproduction against all odds; the role of Assisted Reproduction Technology on the 22nd of August, 2017. Through my community service in the area of Reproductive Health and Fertility management, I was part of the team that produce the first IVF baby in Osun State Baby Gilead in 2013. I also conduct seminars, radio and television programs to promote education to the prevention and management of infertility and reproductive health to the community. I am married with two children.
